Guwahati, Aug 26: A senior Assam journalist was arrested on Friday in Assam’s Hailakandi district for allegedly referring to Mahatma Gandhi as “a spy of British” and later released on bail.
The journalist has been identified as Atin Das (77).
According to police, the journalist was arrested after Congress President Samsuddin Barlaskar filed an FIR against him for referring to Gandhi “a spy of British” and held him responsible for the partition of the country.
Police said that the veteran Journalist was arrested under section 294 and 501 IPC and both sections are bailable.
The veteran journalist had allegedly made objectionable remarks against Gandhi at a programme organised to mark ‘Vibhajan Vibhishika Divas’ (Partition Horror Remembrance Day) on August 14.
He had allegedly questioned Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution towards Independence and accused him of appeasing a section of the population.
Meanwhile, the journalist fraternity of Hailakandi expressed deep anguish after the arrest of the journalist.
