Tura, Sept 22: The Broiler Chicken Wholesalers Association of Tura has submitted a formal complaint against certain individuals who are posing as agents of the Veterinary Department, Government of Meghalaya, and including in alleged extortion activities, which has disrupted the supply of broiler chicken from Assam.
In recent weeks, Broiler Chicken suppliers in Tura, Williamnagar, and Rongram have encountered severe disruptions while transporting their products to West Garo Hills and East Garo Hills. A group of individuals has been obstructing their movement, claiming to have received orders from the Department of Veterinary, Government of Meghalaya, near Bajengdoba Police Station in North Garo Hills.
The Association promptly reported this situation to the Bajengdoba Police Station but has yet to receive a satisfactory response.
On September 21, 2023, a consortium of Broiler Chicken Wholesalers met with Jagdish Chelani, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, and submitted a formal complaint regarding this issue. The Association said these individuals handed a letter to the Bajengdoba Police Station, which purportedly authorised their actions.
Notably, a notification from the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Meghalaya, had been issued to establish checkpoints at various locations along the Assam-Meghalaya border, including Ri Bhoi District and Khasi Hills. However, the notification did not grant authority to any individual or group to impede the free movement of goods.
The association has shared the details of the alleged extortionists.

As a result of these extortion activities, suppliers from Assam have completely halted the shipment of Broiler Chickens to Garo Hills. This disruption has had a severe impact on Tura, Rongram, and Williamnagar.
The Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills has assured swift resolution and has communicated with his counterpart in North Garo Hills.
The Broiler Chicken Wholesalers Association has also vehemently condemned these individuals who are extorting money, demanding a staggering sum of Rs. 20,000 per trip to enter Meghalaya.
Tura is now facing a depletion of chicken stock, leading to an increase in inflation in Garo Hills starting from Friday. If swift intervention does not take place, this situation will adversely affect the general public.
