Guwahati, Sept 9: Cachar police arrested two more fake doctors within the last 24 hours, taking the total number of such arrests in the district to six over the past fortnight.
The arrests were carried out following specific complaints lodged by the Assam Council of Medical Registration (ACMR) as part of the state government’s intensified anti-quackery drive.
Speaking to media persons, SSP Numal Mahatta said the first accused, identified as Pankaj Chaudhary alias Pankaj Chaudhury, a resident of Second Link Road, Silchar, had been fraudulently practicing as a Medicine Specialist, Gastroenterologist, and Diabetologist at multiple clinics and pharmacies in Silchar.
He allegedly issued prescriptions, displayed signboards, and falsely represented himself with qualifications such as MBBS, MD, PGT (Gastro), and fellowships from international institutions.
To bolster his identity, he used Registration No. 24147—a number that, upon verification, was found to belong to another legitimate doctor of the same name based in Uttar Pradesh.
The genuine Dr. Pankaj Chaudhary, son of Jagdish Prasad Chaudhary of Katra, Gonda, had completed his MBBS in 2003 from Kazakh University, Almaty, Kazakhstan, followed by MD (General Medicine) from K.G. Medical College, Lucknow (2006–2009) and later a DM in Gastroenterology from AIIMS, New Delhi. He has been a duly registered practitioner in India since 2003.
In contrast, the impostor in Silchar had no valid qualifications or registrations.
“His acts amount to cheating, forgery, impersonation, and practicing medicine without registration,” SSP Mahatta said.
Police confirmed that the case has been booked under Sections 34, 35, 36, and 37 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, Sections 18 and 26 of the Assam Medical Council Act, 1999, as well as relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
The second accused, Subhir Choudhury, a resident of Kalain, was apprehended from Basanti Pharmacy in Kalain, where he was caught red-handed while treating a patient inside a chamber.
Acting on a complaint filed by Dr. Abhijit Neog, Anti-Quackery Vigilance Officer of ACMR, police raided the pharmacy and seized several incriminating documents and forged materials from his possession. Investigations revealed that Subhir Choudhury had been posing as an MBBS doctor and treating patients for a long time, despite not holding any qualifications recognized by the state.
“Both arrests reflect our commitment to cracking down on quackery that poses a direct threat to public health,” SSP Mahatta told reporters, adding that further investigations are underway to trace possible networks of such fraudulent practitioners operating in the region.
These arrests come under the state government’s broader Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Cell, set up in January 2025 following the enactment of the Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill, 2024.
The initiative has already led to multiple arrests of fake doctors across Assam, especially in districts like Cachar, where unqualified individuals often exploit public trust.
