Guwahati, July 7: Rampant violation of prescribed speed limit continues putting wildlife at risk this monsoon season after sensor cameras have only become partially functional on the national highway along Kaziranga National Park (KNP).
After rainwater inundated some of the low-lying areas of the park, animals started crossing the highway in search of highland during the first wave of floods.
The state transport department interceptor has imposed a hefty fine, amounting to total Rs 9.58 lakh in the last 10 days alone, when the forest department’s sensor cameras could not penalise the violators.
A transport department official said, “Since June 25, a total of 459 cases of overspeeding within the KNP area have been registered by the transport department after its interceptor detected violation of the maximum speed limit of 40 kmph,”.
Assam Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (AMTRON) has been entrusted with the task of making the cameras operational.
The KNP authorities in June last year had installed six speed-sensing cameras equipped with “automatic number plate recognising (ANPR)” radar in the designated animal corridors — Panbari, Haldhibari, Deosure and Amguri — at a cost of Rs 16 crore.
