Shillong, July 7: Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal on Thursday said study is on for retrofitting of the Umiam bridge.

Mondal told reporters that free hand is given to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati to complete the study and submit its report.

Retrofitting of the Umiam bridge will take place only after the IITG submits their report to the government.

On May 16, Mondal along with experts from the IITG conducted an inspection of the Umiam bridge after concerns were raised on the safety of the bridge. On physical verification during the site inspection, they have found that the bearings of the Umiam bridge are not in good condition.

When asked about the proposal to construct a new bridge, the power minister said, “MeECL has nothing to do with that but as the project component, that is why the bridge is with us.”

“Now I think PWD is trying to find out a new alignment and the National highway infrastructure development corporation limited (NHIDCL) is doing the survey work and very soon they are coming up with the new alignment.”
