ASF resurfaces in Kohima a day after Wokha relief

Must read

Kohima, July 16: Barely 24 hours after authorities reported relief from African Swine Fever (ASF) in Wokha district, fresh concern has emerged with the detection of new ASF outbreaks in parts of Kohima district, prompting the administration to impose strict containment measures.

Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem on Thursday confirmed ASF cases at Peducha Village, Phezoucha L. Khel and P. Khel of Kohima Village, and the Razha area near the Dzü-ü River along National Highway-29.

Under the containment protocol, a 1-km radius around the infected premises has been declared an Infected Zone, while a 10-km radius has been designated as a Surveillance Zone to prevent the spread of the disease.

The district administration has prohibited the import, export and movement of live pigs and pork products within, into or out of the notified zones. All butchery shops in the affected areas have also been ordered to remain closed until further orders.

Residents have been advised not to purchase or consume pork from unverified sources and to cooperate with veterinary teams engaged in surveillance and disease-control measures.

The fresh outbreak comes just a day after authorities announced that Wokha had been cleared of ASF, rekindling fears among pig farmers across Nagaland, where pig rearing is a key source of livelihood for thousands of rural households.
