Must read

Shillong, July 16: The Meghalaya government has reviewed a series of initiatives aimed at modernising the state’s livestock sector, including the establishment of a College of Veterinary Science at Kyrdemkulai, expansion of digital animal health services, and infrastructure upgrades to boost livestock productivity and farmer incomes.

Chairing a review meeting of the Veterinary Department, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the government’s focus is on strengthening livestock healthcare, improving productivity and enhancing livelihood opportunities for farmers.

The review noted that the department has been issuing online livestock health certificates since September 2025, while continuing preventive vaccination and treatment programmes to improve animal health across the state.

Officials also assessed the performance of government livestock farms and the Special Livestock Production Programme, which supports piggery and poultry development—two key sectors for rural livelihoods in Meghalaya.

Among the major proposals discussed were the establishment of the College of Veterinary Science at Kyrdemkulai, infrastructure upgrades under various Central government schemes, and the construction of animal check posts in Ri Bhoi and West Garo Hills to strengthen disease surveillance and regulate livestock movement.

The review highlighted several completed initiatives, including the revamp of departmental farms, the setting up of a Regional Semen Production Laboratory and Semen Bank for sheep and goats at Kyrdemkulai under the National Livestock Mission (NLM), and the establishment of an animal shelter at 22 Mer Narang in Ri Bhoi under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM).

The review forms part of the state’s broader efforts to modernise the livestock sector, improve veterinary services, and promote sustainable income opportunities for farmers through scientific breeding, disease control, and improved infrastructure.
