Fresh tensions as Maova seeks Ban on CPO rally

Must read

Chümoukedima, July 16: Fresh tensions have surfaced in Nagaland’s Medziphema region, with the Maova Village Council urging the district administration and police to stop a proposed public rally by the Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO), warning that it could disrupt communal harmony and trigger fresh unrest.

In a representation submitted to the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, the Deputy Commissioner of Chümoukedima and the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Medziphema, the council objected to the CPO’s proposed “peaceful rally” on July 17, alleging that it is specifically directed against Maova Village and could fuel hostility, fear and communal polarisation.

The council cautioned that mobilising people against a particular village could deepen mistrust, inflame sentiments and threaten the fragile peace in the area.

The appeal comes months after a violent clash between Maova Village and members of the Chakhroma community over a land dispute in February. The confrontation reportedly left several people injured and damaged houses, vehicles and other property, with both sides continuing to maintain differing versions of the incident.

Seeking immediate intervention, the village council urged the administration to disallow the rally, prevent any gathering that could intimidate or provoke a particular community, strengthen security in and around Medziphema and Maova Village, and maintain a fair and impartial approach in dealing with the dispute. It also called for dialogue and lawful dispute-resolution mechanisms instead of public demonstrations that could further widen divisions.

The council further reminded the authorities of its earlier representations seeking action against those allegedly responsible for the February violence, maintaining that lasting peace can only be be achieved through impartial administration, adherence to the rule of law and constructive dialogue.

The proposed CPO rally is scheduled for Friday, with the administration expected to take a decision amid heightened security concerns.
