Assam: Woman from Arunachal Pradesh racially abused, assaulted in Guwahati

Guwahati, Nov 3: Yet again a woman from Arunachal Pradesh was racially abused and assaulted by another woman at a shopping outlet in Assam’s Beltola area of Guwahati.

According to reports, the woman from Arunachal Pradesh was standing in a queue to check out of the shopping centre when the other woman barged in and broke into the line. When the woman objected, the other woman started racist comment and assaulted her.

The incident reportedly took place on November 1, 2023.

When the other woman racially abused the victim, she took a video of the incident on her smartphone, which has gone viral on social media. The video clearly shows the other woman abusing and assaulting her.

Meanwhile, the woman has filed a complaint at the Basistha police station. “We have started an investigation into the matter,” said a police official.

A series of attacks have been reported in various parts of the country where people from the northeast region were “harassed, abused, and traumatised”. According to a study, 78% of the people from the northeast region faced harassment and racially abused.

In 2014, M.P. Bezbaruah Committee recommended amendments to the IPC by creating new offences under Section 153C and 509A to deal with comments, gestures and acts intended to insult a member of a particular racial group.
