Guwahati, May 11: In a chilling case that has shocked the city, Basistha police have detained a woman and arrested her lover for the brutal murder of her 10-year-old son, whose body was found stuffed inside a suitcase near the Forest Department office in Guwahati on Sunday.
The body was reportedly discovered by a local scrap collector along a deserted roadside stretch between Basistha and Indira Nagar.
Acting on suspicion, police detained the child’s mother, Dipali Rajbongshi, and her partner, Jyotimoy Haloi. During interrogation, the duo confessed to the heinous crime.
“Dipali, who works at a clinic, had initially filed a missing person’s report, claiming her son had disappeared. However, inconsistencies in her statements raised red flags,” a police official said.
“Further investigation revealed she had filed for divorce from her husband, Bikash Barman, two months ago and was in a relationship with Haloi, a temporary peon at the Accountant General’s office.”
According to police, the couple had conspired to kill the child and executed the plan with brutal intent.
“Both of them planned the murder. Dipali is now in our custody,” the official added.
The child’s schoolbag was also recovered from the crime scene. Police took both accused to the location to reconstruct the sequence of events. A magistrate and forensic team were present at the site during the recovery and evidence collection.
Speaking to reporters, Guwahati DCP Mrinal Deka said, “We have recovered the body in front of the executive magistrate. The forensic team has collected samples for examination. One person has been arrested in connection with the crime.
A missing case was earlier registered, and following that, the body was discovered.”
