Assam: Workshop on ‘Cancer and Palliative Care’ for media persons organised in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh, Sept 8: A sensitization workshop on ‘Cancer and Palliative Care’ for media-persons was organised by Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust on at Hotel Little Palace in Dibrugarh on Sunday.

The workshop was organised under “Project Sanskaar” supported by Assam Science Technology and Environment Council. A number of media persons across Dibrugarh participated in the workshop.

“Today, we have organised a sensitization workshop on ‘Cancer and Palliative Care’ for media persons. In last 6-7 years we have realized journalists are very important people in the society because whenever a situation happens in the town or in remote village, the people reached out to local journalists and they are the people who trying to help whatever they know through their existing knowledge. The media persons also need to aware about their own health. Pratishruti has been working in this field for last long time but their are many misbelieves and superstition about cancer and cancer treatment,” said Dr. Gayatri Gogoi, Honorary Program Director of Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust.

She added, “A large numbers of people still believes Cancer is a curse which is a prejudice. We are working in rural areas and four districts of upper Assam covering rural populations and tea tribe people to give a scientific understanding on the subject of Cancer. As we know Northeast is called the capital of Cancer and incidents of Cancer has been doubled then the national average, as 66% diagnosed in late stage, most of the persons get treatment but the recovery chances are very low then their comes the role of Palliative care. The patient may suffering from Cancer but they have the every rights to live in a better way,” Gogoi said.

Lohit Deka discussed on “Role of Media in spreading awareness on Cancer”. He elaborately discussed importance of media in spreading awareness on Cancer.

Dr. Ramesh Saharia, Dr. Uma Shankar Kutum and Dr Vandana Gupta spoke on the theme of “Cancer Treatment and Challenges”.
