Dibrugarh, Feb 25: In an effort to combat erosion, Dibrugarh MLA Prashant Phukan on Sunday inaugurated the ₹ 75 crore protection scheme in Mohanaghat area of Dibrugarh.

Through NABARD’s Infrastructure Development Assistance (NIDA), 7 km stretch of erosion site has been identified for implementation of the scheme. Two spurs worth ₹ 24 crore and ₹ 27 crore will be constructed along with Geo bags worth ₹ 16 crore and ₹ 9 crore.

Speaking to reporters, MLA Prasanta Phukan said, “We know that the Mohanaghat area has been facing erosion problem. Today, the work to prevent the erosion has been started near the 8 number spur (erosion control dikes). After the completion of the work, the threat perception from the erosion will be less”.

“IIT-Guwahati had advised us to take the measures. Three categories of Geo-bags and porcupine will be used to prevent the massive erosion. IIT-Guwahati has done the survey and they have suggested us the method”, the MLA added.

Dibrugarh has been facing the challenge of soil erosion due to change in course of the Brahmaputra in the upper stream. Earlier, the river current used to hit Dibrugarh’s Rohmoria area but now it directly hitting the town. In 2020, due to massive erosion, six houses were washed away in the Mohanaghat area.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has also funded a project to combat erosion in Dibrugarh, which is currently being implemented.

The great earthquake of August 15, 1950 measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale had altered the course of the Brahmaputra and lifted the bed level of the river in Dibrugarh by several metres. The result being that the Brahmaputra bed now lies several feet higher than the ground level of Dibrugarh town.
