Assam’s healthcare system ready for emergencies: Minister

Must read

Guwahati, Jan 10: Assam health minister Ashok Singhal emphasized that the state’s healthcare system, bolstered by its experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, is well-prepared for emergencies.

“Our doctors, nurses, and paramedics demonstrated extraordinary dedication during the pandemic. With that foundation, we are confident in our ability to manage any health crisis,” the minister said during a review meeting in Dibrugarh on Friday.

Addressing the potential threat of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), Singhal assured that the state remains on high alert despite no immediate advisory being issued. “We are ready to follow the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) guidelines should cases rise nationally. However, there is currently no cause for alarm,” he clarified.

The meeting, part of a series held across Upper Assam districts, also focused on pressing healthcare challenges, particularly maternal and neonatal mortality rates (MMR and IMR), which remain disproportionately high in the region. Singhal highlighted the importance of strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding routine vaccinations for mothers and newborns, urging district officials to ensure 100% vaccination coverage based on registration data.

The Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) received significant attention, with directives to enhance school health check-ups across 30-32 key indicators. Singhal also emphasized the need for early screening of non-communicable diseases among those over 30 and advocated for preventive healthcare measures like yoga and physical activity.

In tea estate areas, the minister directed immediate intervention to address gaps in the Wage Compensation Scheme for pregnant women, particularly in Tinsukia, where exclusions remain a concern. “We must ensure that every eligible beneficiary receives their due support,” he said.

Acknowledging a shortage of doctors and paramedical staff, Singhal instructed the National Health Mission (NHM) to expedite recruitment efforts. He further called for leveraging ASHA workers to promote hygiene awareness and preventive healthcare at the grassroots level.

During the meeting, attended by district commissioners, MLAs, and NHM representatives, Singhal also stressed the importance of accelerating registrations under the Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) program. The initiative aims to make healthcare more accessible and affordable across the state.

“Our goal is to deliver high-quality healthcare services to every citizen of Assam. The dedication of our healthcare teams, combined with targeted initiatives, will help us achieve this vision,” Singhal said, reiterating the government’s commitment to building a resilient healthcare system.
