‘Bioeconomy from Bioresources’ to help women bio entrepreneurs

Shillong, Dec 22: Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) Node, Meghalaya organized seminar on “Bioeconomy from Bioresources with special reference to North East Region of India” on Wednesday at 6th Mile, Upper Shillong.

IBSD is organising a series of such programmes to promote local bioresources of North East Region (NER) under the leadership of Prof. Pulok K. Mukherjee, Director, IBSD, Imphal.

On this occasion, a MoU was signed between IBSD and North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong in the presence of Prof. S. R. Joshi, Head, Department of Biotechnology, NEHU for collaborative research work and human resource development.

The seminar was addressed by Dr. A. A. Mao, Director, Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata.

Dr. Mao highlighted various bioresources including orchids, medicinal plants and mushrooms of Meghalaya for the development of women bio entrepreneurs and boosting the economy of the region. Dr. Mao appreciated the efforts made by Prof. Pulok K. Mukherjee for taking such initiatives for the development of bioresources in different context.

The programme was organized as a part of the project of BIRAC, Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India being performed jointly by IBSD and Bio Resources Development Centre (BRDC), Govt. of Meghalaya.

The programme was attended by over 30 progressive women bio entrepreneurs from different villages enrolled under IBSD’s BioNEST incubator. Many scientists and students of IBSD also attended the programme.

IBSD is organizing such programmes in North East Region to commemorate the 75 years of Independence as part of the occasion “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
