Guwahati, April 28: BJP Assam Pradesh President Dilip Saikia has demanded that Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi be barred from contesting any future elections, citing his extremist communal remarks that could endanger social harmony.
Saikia, the MP from Darrang-Udalguri, said the BJP has already submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission against Gogoi for his divisive comment that Muslims should not vote for the BJP. He criticized Gogoi’s statement as inappropriate, insensitive, and an example of appeasement politics — especially damaging given Gogoi’s representation of Sivasagar, a historically significant constituency.

“It is a grave insult to Assamese pride that someone elected from the heartland of the Ahoms, who once defeated the Mughals, would now side with the Mughals,” Saikia remarked.
A BJP delegation, led by State BJP Vice-President Ashok Bhattarai, submitted the memorandum to the Election Commission on Sunday, demanding strict action against Gogoi.
Meanwhile, in response to the recent attack on Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi’s car by unidentified miscreants, the BJP Assam Pradesh condemned the incident in strong terms. However, Saikia rejected and criticized attempts to implicate the Chief Minister in the controversy.

Following the backlash, Akhil Gogoi issued an unconditional apology to the people of Assam and his party colleagues for his remarks, in which he said that Muslims who vote for the BJP are “kaafirs and will be punished by God.”
“I had deviated from progressive and rational thinking. I made a mistake. I will not make such a comment in the future,” the RTI activist-turned-legislator said.
Gogoi’s statement has triggered a political storm in Assam ahead of the Panchayat elections, providing fresh ammunition to opposition parties.
