SHILLONG, DEC 27: The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned recent incidents that have “vitiated the spirit of the Christmas season” and demanded strictest punishment for perpetrators behind the acts of hate.

In a statement issued on Friday, BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang highlighted the inclusive nature of Christmas, noting that the festival is celebrated with “zeal and fervour by every community in the nation” and holds a special place in the hearts of all Indians, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion.

“The acts of hate committed by a handful of individuals, aimed at disrupting and disrespecting the spirit of Christmas, go against the very nature of Indian civilisation,” Kharkrang said.

He added, “BJP, as a party, believes in the unity and equality of all religions, holds firm faith in the Constitution of India, and stands ready to fiercely protect each citizen’s right to celebrate every festival in a manner that an individual deems fit. This remains non‑negotiable for every member of our party.”

The BJP leader also criticized attempts to politicize such incidents, pointing out that the Prime Minister and senior party leaders regularly participate in Christmas services, including this year.

“Can the parties who are trying to turn criminal acts into political mileage provide one example of their non‑Christian leaders taking part in Christmas celebrations?” Kharkrang challenged.

The BJP spokesperson demanded that those responsible for the “deplorable acts” be arrested, tried, and punished under the strictest provisions of the law.

He affirmed that BJP leaders across the state are coordinating with counterparts in other states to ensure no individual evades accountability.

“BJP Meghalaya stands with every ordinary Indian in demanding that the criminals who have carried out these deplorable acts and have offended the sentiment of every citizen of our nation be arrested, be tried, and be punished according to the strictest provisions under the law,” he concluded.
