Imphal, Aug 10: Renowned Indian Marxist politician Brinda Karat, part of a three-member delegation of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), has castigated the BJP and RSS, blaming them for transforming “Beautiful Manipur” into “Mayhem Manipur” through their divisive politics. Karat, an influential figure in the CPI(M) Politburo and a key advocate for changing rape laws in India, made these remarks following her visit to Kangpokpi in strife-ridden Manipur.
Expressing deep concern over the escalating violence in the state, the 76-year-old former member of Rajya Sabha held the N. Biren Singh-led BJP Government responsible for the inhumane turmoil that has gripped Manipur. She condemned the Chief Minister’s divisive and partisan role despite his responsibility to safeguard the interests of all people in the region.
Karat stressed that the violence has gravely impacted women, with tribal women bearing the brunt of sexual assaults. She offered solidarity and support to the victims, decrying the BJP and RSS’s role in transforming Manipur from a picturesque state to one marred by chaos.
“We are here to express our solidarity, and support, and also to learn about the terrible politics here in this important part of India, in which the BJP and RSS have succeeded in turning a most beautiful state into utter mayhem,” asserted Karat.
When asked about a possible solution to end the ongoing violence, Karat advocated for the immediate removal of the Chief Minister, asserting that a leader responsible for the state’s destruction should not retain power. She emphasized the need to rebuild the confidence of Manipur’s people, particularly in tribal areas, as a crucial step towards restoring peace.
Karat also highlighted the erosion of autonomy in tribal areas across northeastern states, including Manipur. She pointed to issues concerning tribal rights over forest and land, which have been infringed upon in the name of corporate development, detrimentally affecting tribal identity, livelihood, and rights.
Meanwhile, AIDWA’s General Secretary, Mariam Dhawale, elaborated on the organization’s efforts to support the women of Manipur and emphasized the need for immediate interventions in areas such as food security and health services. Dhawale condemned the recent brutal incident captured in a viral video, asserting that such acts, combined with the impunity of perpetrators, have outraged women across India.
During their visit to Kangpokpi, the AIDWA delegation engaged with victims of Manipur’s violence, offering financial aid to survivors and their parents, and assessing the situation in relief camps.
AIDWA, established in 1981, focuses on achieving democracy, equality, and women’s emancipation. It addresses women’s issues across various strata, focusing particularly on marginalized sections. The association actively supports women in distress and victims of violence, fighting for their rights and justice.
