Surat, April 22: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mukesh Kumar Chandrakaant Dalal has been elected unopposed from Gujarat’s Surat Lok Sabha constituency after all other contenders withdrew their candidature. The development came after the nominations of two Congress candidates were cancelled on Sunday and eight other candidates withdrew their candidatures on Monday.
Mukesh Dalal, upon being elected unopposed, expressed his gratitude and said, “We were asking votes for a developed India. Today in Gujarat and the country, the first lotus has bloomed”.
The Congress party faced a setback as the candidature of Nilesh Kumbhani for the Surat Lok Sabha seat was declined due to discrepancies in the signature of the proposers. Suresh Padsala, the substitute candidate from the Congress, also had his nomination form rejected.
With Mukesh Dalal’s victory, the BJP has won its first seat in the Lok Sabha polls. The opposition Congress party had planned to move the Gujarat High Court to seek a stay on the election in the Surat constituency, which is considered a BJP stronghold.
The nomination filing for Gujarat, which goes to polls in the third phase, was held from April 15 to April 19, with April 22 being the last date for withdrawing candidature.
