Brisbane, Oct 04: In a momentous achievement, Dominic Megam Sangma, a talented filmmaker from Garo Hills, “Rapture” (Rimdogittanga), has clinched a prestigious award at the Asian Pacific Screen Awards in Brisbane, Australia. This cinematic triumph comes five years after his acclaimed debut feature film, “Ma.Ama.”

“Rapture,” which was initially premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, takes audiences on a mesmerizing journey into the heart of Meghalaya’s Garo Hills, where it explores the intricate interplay between gullibility and tolerance within a rural village.

This exquisitely filmed sequence, employing a single, uninterrupted take, sets the tone for “Rapture’s” distinctive visual narrative. Dominic Sangma, the visionary Indian filmmaker behind the project, continues his exploration of the memories of village life in a trilogy that commenced with his debut film, “Ma’ama,” in 2018.

“Rapture” presented in the Garo language, weaves a compelling narrative around a 10-year-old boy grappling with night blindness. In his world, every night becomes a haunting ordeal as the village succumbs to the fear of child-kidnappers. The film’s genesis lies in another poignant memory from Sangma’s own life, hailing from the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya.

As the accolades pour in for “Rapture,” the film not only shines a spotlight on the rich tapestry of Meghalaya’s culture and landscape but also captures the universal essence of human resilience and the enduring power of storytelling.

This remarkable triumph at the Asian Pacific Screen Awards solidifies Dominic Megam Sangma’s position as a luminary in the world of cinema, and “Rapture” stands as a testament to his ability to craft evocative narratives that resonate with audiences across borders and cultures. The film’s exploration of themes such as fear, innocence, and the human spirit has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the global cinematic landscape.
