Tura, March 21: Unindentified men have abducted the manager of a construction company from the project site in Karukol Siju area of South Garo Hills after entering their camp site before dawn on Wednesday.
Police have launched a combing operation across the region and set up road blocks to check vehicles and frisk travellers passing through the area.
The incident took place shortly after 1:30 AM of March 20th when the construction workers and team of R K Singh Construction Company were asleep at the camp site in Rongdik village of Karukol where a bridge is being constructed. The area falls under Siju police station.
Unidentified men arrived at their camp and asked for diesel fuel on the pretext their vehicle had run out of fuel.
The construction firm supervisor had asked the manager of the project, sleeping in the adjacent room and identified as Akilesh from Uttar Pradesh, to go out and check on the visitors.
Akilesh never returned to his room and the unidentified men also disappeared along with him.
Upon realising the disappearance, the construction supervisor immediately alerted police but his manager’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Police suspect the kidnappers to be habitual criminals out to extort ransom from the construction company.
This is the first such instance of a suspected abduction in South Garo Hills in a long time and criminal gangs are a prime suspect since the region has been militancy free for well over six years, after the death of militant leader Sohan D Shira and end of the GNLA outfit.
