Guwahati, Dec 28: Indian Oil’s Bongaigaon Refinery (BGR), located in Dhaligaon, Chirang district, has achieved a major milestone with the official launch of E-20, a petrol blend containing 20% ethanol. This groundbreaking initiative, unveiled on December 25, was spearheaded by NK Barua, Executive Director & Refinery Head of BGR, alongside senior officials like JJ Das, CGM (Projects), and Mihir Singhal, CGM (TS&HSE). The event marked another stride toward transforming India’s energy landscape.
The introduction of E-20 aligns with the National Biofuels Policy, which targets a nationwide rollout of 20% ethanol-blended petrol by 2025. This shift not only reduces India’s reliance on imported crude oil but also enhances energy security and meets the country’s growing energy demands.
Ethanol, derived from crops like sugarcane and maize, offers a dual benefit: fostering rural economic growth while supporting energy sustainability. The increased demand for ethanol will boost farmers’ incomes, stimulate agricultural productivity, and uplift rural communities.
On the environmental front, E-20 contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon monoxide and harmful hydrocarbons. This reflects the government’s commitment to adopting cleaner energy solutions and advancing eco-friendly transportation.
The rollout of E-20 further cements BGR’s reputation as a leader in implementing the Ethanol Blended with Petrol (EBP) Programme, driving India closer to its sustainable energy targets.
Bongaigaon Refinery has been a trailblazer in ethanol blending efforts. Key milestones in its journey include:
1. The first dispatch of ethanol-blended petrol via Tank Truck Lorry (TTL) was on August 13, 2021.
2. Launch of E-10 (10% ethanol blend) on January 19, 2022.
3. First railway dispatch of ethanol-blended petrol on February 17, 2022.
4. Industry-first unloading of a full ethanol rake on April 14, 2022.
5. E-12 (12% ethanol blend) on February 16, 2023, and E-15 (15% ethanol blend) on May 6, 2024.
The launch of E-20 signals a bold step in India’s journey toward energy independence, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment. BGR’s unwavering commitment to innovation and green initiatives places it at the forefront of the nation’s efforts to adopt sustainable energy practices and reduce emissions.
