Buckwheat farming, also known as ‘Jarain’ in Khasi, opens new global avenue for local entrepreneurs

Shillong, Sept 11: The two-day Meghalaya Buckwheat Global Showcase 2022 concluded with a bang on Saturday as farmers from various districts came together to learn more from this game-changing programme at IHM Campus, Mawdiangdiang, Shillong.

The first-of-its-kind event was to showcase the possibilities of buckwheat flour derived from the seeds of a variant of the Khasi herb ‘Jarain’, which is endemic to Meghalaya. The event was organised to empower Meghalaya farmers under the Meghalaya Farmers (Empowerment) Commission.

Local chef and bakers of all shades but mainly the young who are ready to experiment with the new crop were present to showcase their breads, varieties of buns and cookies with buckwheat as the base.

The Chief Guest of the event, Mawryngkneng MLA and Govt Deputy Chief Whip, Pyniaid Sing Syiem on speaking to Hub News said that the event helps the local farmers in exploring new ventures of farming and to generate a higher source of income from Buckwheat plantation.

Syiem emphasized on the fact that the introduction of Buckwheat plantation in every district will help generate employment for the youth in the State.

Syiem further said that the MDA government under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has committed to help and support the Buckwheat programme as it will encourage farmers in the State to take up Buckwheat plantation and farming.

The final day of the Meghalaya Buckwheat Global Showcase 2022 was attended by farmers from all districts, the staff of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), East Khasi Hills, students and staff of IHM Shillong. The main attraction of the event were the Japanese Buckwheat Noodles and the Open Kitchen where different varieties of food were cook by celebrity chefs from across the country and the Northeast.
