New Delhi, Feb 11: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday that the guidelines for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be released before the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. He further stated that the process to grant Indian nationality to the beneficiaries will commence shortly thereafter.

Under the CAA, The Modi government aims to provide Indian nationality under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to persecuted non-Muslim migrants, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians, who arrived in India from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan by December 31, 2014.

At the ET NOW Global Business Summit 2024, Shah affirmed that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is a lawful measure that will be notified and implemented before the upcoming elections. He emphasised that there should be no confusion about the timeline for CAA implementation.

He said, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not designed to revoke anyone’s citizenship. He addressed concerns about instigation among Muslim communities regarding CAA, stating that the law does not include provisions for citizenship revocation. Shah clarified that the purpose of CAA is to provide citizenship to individuals who have faced religious persecution and migrated from Bangladesh and Pakistan. He urged against opposition to this law.

Since 2020, the Home Ministry has been seeking extensions at regular intervals from the parliamentary committee for the formulation of rules regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Tragically, over a hundred individuals lost their lives during protests or as a result of police actions following the passage of the CAA in Parliament.
