Tura, Feb 4: On World Cancer Day, the Tura Civil Hospital held an awareness programme to educate the people on prevention, detection and treatment of the deadly disease.
Organised by the Oncology Department of the hospital, the awareness programme was attended by over 50 OPD patients.
Radiation Oncologist Dr. Silchang K Marak spoke on the history of cancer and its causes.
Dental Surgeon Dr Menokichi D Sangma spoke on dental hygiene and highlighted the importance of brushing teeth twice a day. She advised that every individual should visit a dentist in six months for an dental check-up.
“Any person who consumes tobacco product should be extra cautious about oral hygiene and avoid tobacco products”, she added.
Diabetologist Dr Cynthia R Marak, who is the nodal officer for Non-communicable diseases in the hospital urged people to come out for cancer screening and for other NCD related diseases like heart and diabetes. “Early detection is key to treatment of the patients,” Dr Marak said.
She also enlightened the gathering on breast and cervical cancer, its symptoms and prevention. “It is important to note that we do self-screening of our bodies on a regular basis and visit hospital for screening and medical advice”.
Others who were present and spoke on the occasion included oncologist Dr Jeby Marak, Dental Surgeon Dr. Huberth Ch. Momin and Physiotherapist Billy Graham M. Marak.
