Tura, May 2: Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU) on Friday held a high-level review meeting at its Balalgre campus to take stock of academic progress and persistent infrastructure issues, including problems with land, electricity, internet and water supply.
Vice Chancellor, Dr. Vasanti Vijay Kumar opened the session with a call for greater collaboration in building a robust academic environment. Registrar Ambrose Ch. Marak followed with a presentation outlining the university’s current status, milestones and unresolved challenges.
Government Adviser (Education) H.M. Shangpliang stressed on the need to fast-track infrastructure improvements, while Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing higher education in Meghalaya.
MLA Subir Marak (Rangsakona ST) echoed the concerns and stressed the importance of CWSSU in empowering the region’s youth. The meeting also saw the presence of MBOSE Chairman C.P. Marak, IFS (Retd), and several senior officials.
Appointment letters for security guards and multi-tasking staff were handed over to the sons of local Nokmas by the minister, adviser and the MLA—seen as a move to build local engagement.
A coordination committee, led by DD Sangma (Secretary to the Government), with the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, and DCs of WGH and SWGH as members, will monitor progress across departments. Another review meeting with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is scheduled for May 7 in Shillong.
The university has completed recruitment for assistant professors and other staff. The first batch of postgraduate students is set to begin in August 2025.

Speaking to Hub News, Registrar Ambrose Ch. Marak said, “We’re ready with the syllabus, curriculum, and prospectus. A meeting with affiliated college principals will be held soon, and admissions will open once results are declared. We will follow the prescribed intake norms for the first batch.”
Despite the progress, key concerns over irregular power supply and inadequate water facilities remain. Officials have assured that steps are being taken to resolve these at the earliest.
