Carnivorous Healer: The Medicinal Potential of Meghalaya’s Endangered Pitcher Plant

Must read

Shillong, Nov 25: The endangered Nepenthes khasiana, a carnivorous pitcher plant endemic to Meghalaya, has long fascinated scientists and local communities alike. Beyond its unusual diet of insects, a groundbreaking new study has uncovered its vast potential as a reservoir of medicinal compounds, particularly in the fluid of its unopened pitchers.

Published in Intelligent Pharmacy Journal(2024), the study “Unlocking the phytochemicals in unopened pitcher fluids of Nepenthes khasiana -a GC–MS study”,  reveals 22 bioactive compounds in Nepenthes khasiana, with promising applications in treating cancer, coronavirus, microbial infections, and more. These findings come from an interdisciplinary team comprising researchers from the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya, Cotton University in Guwahati, and NIPER Guwahati.

Bridging Indigenous Knowledge and Modern Science

Local Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia communities in Meghalaya have used the plant for generations to treat ailments such as eye infections, stomach disorders, and diabetes. However, this study is the first to scientifically validate the therapeutic potential of its pitcher fluids, historically favored by indigenous healers over other plant parts.

Unlocking Bioactive Secrets with GC-MS

Researchers collected unopened pitcher fluids from Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills, carefully isolating bioactives through an advanced extraction process using methanol, chloroform, and water. Utilizing Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), the team identified 22 compounds, including fatty acids, antioxidants, and antimicrobials, with 19 meeting Lipinski’s Rule of Five—an essential benchmark for oral drug development.

Hexadecanoic Acid: Effective against respiratory issues and infections.

“These compounds illustrate the diverse pharmacological applications of Nepenthes khasiana, positioning it as a vital resource for addressing modern health challenges,” the study notes.

Conservation and the Future of Drug Discovery

The researchers have called for clinical trial on animals along with cytotoxic study are required for the potential creation of novel medications employing some of the bioactive chemicals discovered in N. khasiana unopened pitcher fluids.
