Guwahati, Mar 9: A Special CBI Court in Agartala has sentenced four individuals, including a former investigator of the Development Commissioner (Handicraft) office and a Tripura government PG teacher, to rigorous imprisonment for 4-5 years in connection with the misappropriation of government funds. The court also imposed a total fine of ₹2.05 lakh on the accused.
The convicted individuals are: Achyut Kumar Das alias A.K. Das, former Investigator of the Development Commissioner (Handicraft), Marketing & Service Extension Centre (M&SEC), Agartala – sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) and fined ₹75,000. The second person is Kamal Krishna Debnath, a PG teacher employed by the Tripura State Government – sentenced to four years’ RI and fined ₹20,000.
The third person is Kalpana Debnath, then President of the Women Development Society, Ranir Gaon, West Tripura – sentenced to four years’ RI and fined ₹55,000. The fourth person is Sanjay Debnath alias Bhola, then Secretary of the Women Development Society, Ranir Gaon, West Tripura – sentenced to four years’ RI and fined ₹55,000.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case on July 31, 2012, against the accused, alleging that they conspired to fraudulently conduct skill upgradation training programs in cane and bamboo crafts under the Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana (AHVY) Scheme from 2010-2011. However, the training programs only existed on paper. The accused fabricated reports and falsely claimed to have conducted four-month training sessions for 20 artisans, misappropriating ₹4.5 lakh meant for instructor wages and trainee compensations.
Following an extensive probe, the CBI filed a charge sheet on June 30, 2014, and charges were framed by the court on August 31, 2017. The prosecution examined 48 witnesses during the trial.
After evaluating the evidence, the court found all four accused guilty and pronounced the sentences.
