Shillong, March 10: The Central government has released ₹23.4 crore for the Shillong Government College of Engineering, as part of a total sanctioned amount of ₹26 crore under a 90:10 funding pattern, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma informed the Assembly on Monday.
The college applied for AICTE approval on December 26, 2024, to introduce Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering courses. Following this, two scrutiny meetings were conducted on January 22 and February 4, 2025. AICTE experts advised the college to address certain infrastructure deficiencies, which are currently being rectified.
The academic block, administrative block, and hostels of the college were completed and inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on January 16, 2023. Essential services, including water supply and electrical connections, are in place.
To support the institution’s development, the government has approved the establishment of the college and created 55 posts. Additionally, the Additional Director of Polytechnic & Shillong Engineering College has been given additional charge as Principal. Thirteen existing faculty members from Shillong Polytechnic who meet the required qualifications have also been assigned teaching roles.
Furthermore, NEHU has granted provisional affiliation to the college for a period of three years, paving the way for its academic operations to commence.
