Shillong, Nov 16: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said the government is examining all aspects of the demand for making Khasi and Garo as official languages of Meghalaya.
“We have to examine all these aspects and then take a call,” Sangma told reporters.
“Earlier times also the issue of declaring an official language depended on the definition of what official language means. Therefore, all these aspects are being examined even today,” he said.
Stating that there are logistical challenges, the chief minister explained, “Tomorrow, if notings in the government files can be done in Garo language, will that be an issue or not, how will we handle that. If somebody makes file notings in Garo, so people who speak Khasi and English are not able to then make comments or understand then we will have challenges in the governance process also. If those kinds of aspects are going to be included if it is official language then how do we overcome that challenge or if we remove that aspect and government notification and notings in the file need not be in Khasi or Garo will that then mean the definition of official.”
“So, we see all those aspects and then only decide how we move ahead with this,” he said adding that as a government and as a chief minister of the state he definitely wants Khasi and Garo languages to be included as an official language but they will have to first assess the challenges and devise ways to overcome those.
