IMD issues heavy rainfall alert for NE States due to cyclonic storm over Bay of Bengal

Shillong, Nov 16: The India Metrological Department (IMD) has cautioned several states including Meghalaya and other states in the North East to take precautionary measures as it expects moderate to very heavy rainfall from November 16 to 18 in parts of these states.

In an advisory issued on Thursday, it said the rain will be caused due to the Deep Depression over west-central Bay of Bengal, which would further intensify into a cyclonic storm as it moves north-northeastwards in the next 24 hours.

“Yesterday’s (November 15, 2023) depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards till the midnight (2330 hours IST) of 15th November and thereafter gradually recurved north-northeastwards and intensified into a deep depression in the morning (0530 hours IST) of 16th November. Continuing to move further north-northeastwards, it lay centered at 1130 hours IST of today, the 16th November over Westcentral Bay of Bengal near latitude 17.9°N and longitude 87.3°E, about 420 km east of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 270 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 410 km south of Digha (West Bengal) and 540 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). It is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards, intensify further into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and cross Bangladesh coast between Mongla and Khepupara with wind speed of 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph by the early hours of 18th November, 2023,” the advisory said.

IMD expected light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall likely over coastal districts of West Bengal on November 16-17 and over coastal districts of north Odisha on November 16.

Similarly, light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during November 16-18 with very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Mizoram and Tripura on November 17.

Also, light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely over south Assam and east Meghalaya on November 17-18.

Due to the cyclonic storm, winds are expected to reach speeds of upto 60 to 90 kmph.
