Shillong, July 25: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Saturday urged students to embrace innovation while using technology responsibly as Lady Keane College celebrated its 91st Foundation Day, marking more than nine decades of academic excellence and women’s empowerment.

The celebration, themed “Building Tomorrow with 91 Years of Legacy,” brought together students, alumni, faculty members, government officials and distinguished guests to honour one of Meghalaya’s oldest institutions of higher learning.

Addressing the gathering, Rymbui lauded the college’s contribution to shaping generations of women leaders and strengthening higher education in Meghalaya and the Northeast. He described Lady Keane College as a symbol of academic excellence whose impact extends beyond classrooms to the empowerment of women and society.

Calling on students to prepare for a rapidly evolving world, the minister said technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, have transformed the way people learn and communicate. However, he stressed that students must use technology responsibly, protect their mental well-being and cultivate critical thinking, discipline and patience.

“The tools may have changed, but the importance of creating meaningful impact remains the same,” he said, urging young people to remain focused and purposeful while exploring new opportunities.

Rymbui also reiterated the Meghalaya government’s commitment to strengthening higher education through greater investments in innovation, collaboration and youth participation in development.

Director of Higher and Technical Education H.B.D. Sangma praised the institution’s enduring contribution to women’s education and urged students to go beyond academic excellence by embracing creativity, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies.

She said that while degrees open doors, qualities such as character, competence, innovation and lifelong learning ultimately define success. She also encouraged students to preserve Meghalaya’s cultural heritage, protect the environment and lead with humility and compassion.

During the celebration, the Education Minister released the College Magazine, the Keanean Journal of Arts and the Annual History Magazine, highlighting the institution’s academic and literary achievements.

The college also honoured outstanding students, faculty members and institutional bodies with awards for excellence in research, academics, inclusivity, student initiatives, fashion design and co-curricular activities.

The programme concluded with colourful cultural performances by students, showcasing the rich traditions and vibrant campus life of the institution as it moves towards its centenary celebrations.
