Tura, July 24: A suspected habitual drug trafficker was arrested after allegedly attacking police personnel during an anti-narcotics operation in Tura on Friday morning, leaving two policemen with minor injuries.

Acting on specific intelligence, a team from the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), West Garo Hills, assisted by CRPF personnel, conducted a raid at Mahendra Colony, where they apprehended Toseng R. Sangma (30), a resident of Alokpang in Bulawe, South Garo Hills.

Police said the accused violently resisted arrest and assaulted members of the raiding team in an attempt to flee. After a brief struggle, the team overpowered and arrested him. Two police personnel sustained minor injuries during the operation, while the accused also suffered injuries in the course of his apprehension.

During the search, police recovered 11 vials containing suspected heroin, seven empty vials, and ₹12,060 in cash from his possession. The suspected heroin, weighing about 1.49 grams, was seized in the presence of independent witnesses.

Police described Sangma as a habitual offender, stating that he has multiple cases registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain his links to the local drug network.
