Shillong, July 24: In a bid to tackle growing traffic congestion caused by indiscriminate parking, the East Khasi Hills police have announced a special enforcement drive, ‘Operation Free Flow’, aimed at clearing illegally parked vehicles and improving traffic movement across Shillong.

The campaign, to be led by the newly constituted Shillong Traffic Enforcement Team (STET), will focus on vehicles parked in no-parking zones or in a manner that obstructs the free flow of traffic.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, the enforcement drive will be carried out strictly and impartially, with exemptions only for genuine emergencies or medical exigencies.

Police said the initiative is not merely an enforcement exercise but also seeks to promote responsible parking habits, strengthen traffic discipline and make Shillong’s roads safer and more efficient for commuters.

Appealing for public cooperation, the Shillong Traffic Police urged motorists to follow traffic rules, avoid illegal parking and encourage others to do the same. Officials said responsible parking and disciplined road use are essential to reducing congestion and ensuring smoother traffic flow in the city.

The special drive comes amid increasing complaints of haphazard parking, which has been blamed for frequent traffic bottlenecks and inconvenience to road users across Shillong.
