Shillong, Aug 19: Chandrayaan 3’s lander Vikram shared the latest images of the moon on Friday after completing a manoeuvre that took it closer to its destination.
India’s space research organisation (ISRO) shared stunning images that have been taken by the Lander Imager (LI) Camera-1 on X (previously known as Twitter). In the pictures, different craters of the moon are shown, one of which is the Giordano Bruno crater, one of the youngest large craters on the moon.
Chandrayaan-3 Mission:
The Lander Module (LM) health is normal.LM successfully underwent a deboosting operation that reduced its orbit to 113 km x 157 km.
The second deboosting operation is scheduled for August 20, 2023, around 0200 Hrs. IST #Chandrayaan_3#Ch3 pic.twitter.com/0PVxV8Gw5z

The pictures were taken after the lander successfully detached from the spacecraft’s propulsion module on Thursday.
“Thanks for the ride, mate,” ISRO tweeted.

‘Thanks for the ride, mate! 👋’
said the Lander Module (LM).LM is successfully separated from the Propulsion Module (PM)
LM is set to descend to a slightly lower orbit upon a deboosting planned for tomorrow around 1600 Hrs., IST.

The “soft landing” of the lander is expected on the south polar region of the moon on August 23, while the propulsion module will continue to orbit around the moon and study the Earth’s atmosphere.
Only after the lander touches down and the lunar dust settles ‘Pragyaan’ rover will roll down from the Vikram Lander. Then the lander will take images of the rover, and vice versa.
Chandrayaan-3 Mission:
The orbit-raising maneuver (Earth-bound perigee firing) is performed successfully from ISTRAC/ISRO, Bengaluru.
The spacecraft is expected to attain an orbit of 127609 km x 236 km. The achieved orbit will be confirmed after the observations.

Chandrayaan-3, the third in India’s programme of lunar exploration, was launched on July 14 and is expected to build on the success of its earlier moon missions.
Chandrayaan-2 was launched in July 2019, but it was only partially successful.
India’s first Moon mission started in 2008.
