Shillong, Sept 9: One of the several areas in the state capital facing an acute problem of drug abuse is West Shillong constituency, which has turned into one of the hotspots of drug abuse and drug peddling in the state.
Incidentally, Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh is the local MLA of this constituency and on Monday he said several interventions are on the card to fight drug abuse in West Shillong constituency.
West Shillong constituency includes localities like Mawprem, Jhalupara, Lama Villa, Sunny Hills, Lumdiengjri, Barapathar (Mawbah) and others. Some of these localities are densely populated.
Lyngdoh after presiding over a high-level meeting to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse in the state focused on his own constituency and identified it as a hotspot of drug abuse.
During the meeting, Lyngdoh brainstormed with several senior police, social welfare department, and law department officials. The officials and the Minister discussed ways to fight this acute problem the state is now facing.
Lyngdoh said after the meeting that discussions were held to form Village Defence Parties (VDP). Formation of VDPs, would strengthen the existing security in the constituency with local knowledge and in turn would help counter drug-related activities.
Moreover, one of the other proposals taken during the meeting was to bring the Shillong Cantonment Board (SCB) area under the purview of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA). Implementation of the act would ensure registration of residents in this area.
The SCB was established in 1885 and comprises an area of 491 acres. The population under the SCB, as per the 2011 census was 11,919. This number has substantially increased and the area under SCB is densely populated now.
