Tura, April 26: The West Garo Hills District administration, in collaboration with the District Mineral Foundation (DMF), has launched the SPARK Camps initiative to drive meaningful youth engagement in underserved regions across the district. The programme, which began at Tikrikilla College and Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, aims to provide college and higher secondary school students with the tools to build confidence, develop essential life skills, and showcase their talents.
Inspired by the success of the SPARK programme implemented by the Meghalaya Education Department for schools, and the “ia ka Mynried” winter camps initiative of East Jaintia Hills, the West Garo Hills District Administration sought to extend similar support to students that were previously untouched by such interventions.

Jagdish Chelani, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, shared, “The SPARK programme has had a profound impact in Tura, and we wanted to bring that same energy to areas like Tikrikilla, Bhaitbari, and Demdema – areas where such programmes have not reached before. This initiative is designed to build the confidence of young people, give them a platform to display their talents, and equip them with life skills that will empower them and their future.”
He further expressed that he’s seen immense potential within the people of the region. “Remember, life is not about competing with others but about improving yourself every day. Embrace every experience as a lesson, and always strive to align your aspirations with your true potential,” he said.

The programme focuses on key areas such as confidence-building, helping students improve their communication skills, body language and interpersonal skills. Additionally, the initiative includes life skills training, where participants will gain awareness of financial literacy, substance abuse prevention, environmental preservation, and healthy coping habits. Finally, the SPARK Camps provide a safe and supportive space for students to demonstrate their talents.
Speaking about the significance of the programme, Rikrak N. Marak, Block Development Officer of Tikrikilla, said, “This programme is not just about academics; it’s about preparing students for life. We are helping them develop the skills to confidently express themselves, engage with others, and make informed choices. By giving them the tools to navigate the challenges ahead, we hope to inspire them to aim higher and pursue their dreams.”

Sharing his thoughts on the programme’s significance, the Principal of Tikrikilla College expressed, “We are excited to see how this programme will impact our students. SPARK Camps will help our students build confidence and develop key life skills, which are essential for their growth and future success. We are grateful for this opportunity and encourage our students to engage fully with the program.”
The SPARK Camps will continue to expand across the district to address the needs of college and higher secondary school students, ensuring they are equipped with the foundational life skills and opportunities to thrive.
