Shillong, Sept 12: Four NGOs have threatened to take ‘stern decision’ against the state government for its indifferent attitude towards the demand for suspending top police officials to ensure free and fair investigation into the incident that led to the death of former HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew on August 13, 2021.
A statement issued here on Sunday by four NGOs – Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and Ri Bhoi Youth Front (RBYF) – have questioned the reason for the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and his Cabinet to find it difficult to take action against the police officials involved in the firing incident which killed Thangkhiew.
“The Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui had claimed that he was not aware about the operation which led to the death of Thangkhiew, so who had given the order? Who is above the Home Minister in the Home Department? Whether he has resigned as Home Minister or just pretending to wash his hand off the incident?” they asked.
“We warn the state government that it should take the matter seriously before its too late and before we take stern decision,” the NGOs said.
