Shillong, Mar 8: It’s all about preparing them for real-world applications in food science, nutrition, and community development.
And thats the reason why students of the College of Community Science (CCS), Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Tura, are on a countrywide tour to broaden their perspectives beyond classroom teaching.
The tour is a part of their academic curriculum, designed to provide practical exposure to national institutes, research organizations, and cultural heritage sites across India.
A total of 52 students from the BSc Community Science and BSc Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics programs, accompanied by faculty and staff members, are exploring three major cities: Delhi, Mumbai, and Goa.
The tour commenced in the national capital, Delhi, where students visited leading institutions and historical landmarks. At Mother Dairy, they learned about large-scale milk processing, quality control, and dairy product development. The visit to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, allowed students to engage with cutting-edge research in the Department of Food Science and Technology, Genetics, and Biochemistry. These interactions provided them with valuable insights into advancements in food technology, genetic research, and nutritional sciences.

From Delhi, the group proceeded to Mumbai, India’s financial and commercial hub, where they explored a mix of educational, industrial, and cultural landmarks. The students will visit SNDT Women’s University, one of India’s premier institutions for women’s education, where they will participate in an interactive cultural exchange program with SNDT students.
The itinerary also includes visits to CIRCOT (Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology), ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) institutes, and other research organizations to gain insights into agriculture-based innovations, textile research, and food technology advancements. These visits will offer students firsthand exposure to scientific research, sustainable farming techniques, and food processing innovations that align with their academic pursuits.
The final leg of the tour will take the students to Goa, where they will visit the Goa College of Home Science and various ICAR institutes, further strengthening their understanding of nutrition, food sciences, and agricultural innovations. The students will also explore the rich cultural heritage of Goa, visiting churches, forts, and museums that reflect the unique Indo-Portuguese history of the region.
The educational tour was officially flagged off by the Dean of the College, Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, who emphasized the importance of experiential learning and industry exposure in shaping future professionals.
