SHILLONG, JUNE 11: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said the state government is waiting for alternative mining proposals from East Jaintia Hills coal traders before holding a joint meeting with the Chief Minister and taking the matter to the Centre.
“I have already met coal traders from East Jaintia Hills. We had fruitful discussions… and we are now waiting for them to submit alternative mining proposals to the Department of Mining and Geology,” Dhar said.
He said the traders argued scientific mining is not viable in Jaintia Hills.
“They said scientific mining is not feasible for this region. That is why we told them to submit their alternatives and suggestions. We are waiting for that,” he stated.
Once proposals are submitted, Dhar said a joint meeting will be convened.
“After they submit the alternative mining plan… the Chief Minister will hold a meeting so we can have a joint discussion between the government and coal traders’ associations from different parts of the state,” he said.
Dhar flagged two key issues traders raised.
“First, the area prescribed under the present policy is too big. So, we are requesting the Government of India to reduce the area. Second, scientific mining does not seem feasible in the present location in Jaintia Hills.”
He added the government will pursue the matter legally with the Centre.
“We will take their suggestions… and we will pursue the matter with the Government of India. Everything is as per law,” he said.
