Guwahati, Nov 6: Three Christian organizations have jointly petitioned the Dima Hasao district administration, urging legal action against VHP leader Surendra Jain for what they described as an “unfounded” accusation against the Church regarding its alleged involvement in the “drug business.”
The organizations did not specify the details of Jain’s remarks, but a Church leader explained that the petition was filed to convey “deep shock, pain, and disappointment” over Jain’s alleged attempt to “malign” the Christian community. The remarks were reportedly made during the launch of the Joya Thaosen Computer Learning Centre in Haflong on October 27.
Jain had purportedly stated, “Today I realized that the drug business is also done on a large scale by the Church. On one hand, the church is destroying our culture, insulting the traditions, and beliefs here, and also destroying the life of the people here.”
He added, “Conversion is a challenge; we address it, but we will also tell the Church that while Christians here are free to follow their faith, any disturbance to law and order, disrespect to local beliefs, or involvement in the drug trade will not be tolerated by society.”
The petition submitted by the Christian organizations condemned Jain’s statements as “unfounded, baseless, and unacceptable,” arguing that such statements could “foster mistrust, undermine unity, and damage the inclusiveness essential for peaceful coexistence and progress in Assam and the country as a whole.”
