Bangladesh seeks 250 MW power from Tripura to meet growing electricity demand

Must read

Agartala, Nov 5: Bangladesh relies heavily on India’s Tripura state for its electricity needs and has recently requested an increase to 250 MW to help meet its growing power demand.

Currently, Tripura supplies between 50 to 80 MW of electricity to Bangladesh daily. Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) Managing Director Biswajit Basu stated that Bangladesh’s government is requesting additional power due to a significant electricity shortage affecting its consumers.

“Right now, we are providing 50 to 80 MW of electricity to Bangladesh every day. Talks are ongoing, but any increase in supply would require the Central government’s permission and clearances, along with formal agreements and other necessary procedures,” Basu explained.

He noted that Bangladesh has been prompt with payments to TSECL for electricity supplied, describing the country as a “good neighbor.” However, Basu added that while outstanding payments from Bangladesh are minimal, TSECL is owed nearly Rs 500 crore by consumers within Tripura.

Tripura, an electricity-surplus state, began supplying 100 MW of power to Bangladesh in March 2016 from the ONGC Tripura Power Company (OTPC) plant. This supply has sometimes increased to 160 MW, reflecting cooperative ties between the countries.

The power-sharing agreement, initially signed in 2016, has been renewed twice to maintain the supply. The Rs 10,000 crore Palatana power plant, which supplies power to Bangladesh, stands as a symbol of New Delhi-Dhaka cooperation, facilitated by Bangladesh allowing the transit of large project equipment and turbines through its territory to Palatana in southern Tripura.
