Shillong, June 27: One of Shillong’s most ambitious tourism projects could be ready as early as next year, with the company executing the ₹151-crore Shillong Rope Way Project assuring the state government that it is working to fast-track construction after overcoming initial delays.
Cabinet Minister and South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai on Saturday inspected the project site at Madan Laban along with State BJP leaders under the Centre’s Pragati Path Yatra, an initiative marking the 12th anniversary of the Narendra Modi-led government to review centrally funded development projects. Officials from the North Eastern Council (NEC), the implementing agency, the State Tourism Department and other concerned departments were also present during the inspection.

Speaking to reporters, Shullai said the ropeway project, sanctioned last year at an estimated cost of ₹151 crore, was initially delayed due to the need for tree-felling permissions and a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the High Court.
With the PIL now dismissed and the required clearances moving ahead, construction has picked up pace. Although the project has an official completion timeline of three years, Shullai said the executing company has assured him that every effort is being made to complete it by next year.
He also said that ₹3 crore has been paid to the Raid Laban Dorbar as compensation for land acquired for the project.
Expressing optimism about its impact, the minister said the Shillong Rope Way is expected to emerge as a landmark tourist attraction, drawing visitors from across the country while creating employment opportunities, boosting the local economy and adding a new dimension to Meghalaya’s tourism landscape.
