Shillong, Jul 27: A suspected group attack left one man dead and two others injured in East Khasi Hills late Sunday night, with police suspecting the victims knew each other.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said the first victim was found at around 10.30 pm near the BSF Battalion gate with stab wounds.
“BSF personnel shifted him to NEIGRIHMS where he is undergoing treatment,” Syiem told reporters on Monday.
Hours later, police were alerted to another body in Mawkasiang.
“We received information in the morning about a body with multiple stab injuries in Mawkasiang. The body has been sent for post-mortem. A case has been registered and investigation has begun,” he said.
A third man from the same group was later traced in Mawtawar, also with injuries.
“He has been hospitalised as well. It appears all three were together,” the SP said.
The deceased has been identified as Shanbor Rani, who police said had prior criminal records.
“He was previously involved in several cases, including murder and offences under the NDPS Act,” Syiem said.
On possible motives, the SP said nothing has been ruled out yet.
“At this stage we cannot confirm the motive. It could be related to drugs or a vendetta. The investigation will reveal why Shanbor Rani was killed,” he said.
Police confirmed that a vehicle recovered from the spot belonged to the deceased.
A case has been registered and further probe is on.
