413 farmers trained in South West Garo Hills under month-long 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan'

Shillong, July 27: More than 400 farmers across 10 villages in South West Garo Hills were trained in sustainable farming practices during the month-long Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Farm Campaign), aimed at promoting soil health and reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers.

The campaign, held from June 1 to June 30, was jointly implemented by the District Agriculture Office, the District Horticulture Office and the Project Director of ATMA as part of a nationwide initiative of the Government of India.

A total of 413 farmers participated in awareness programmes, training sessions and field demonstrations focusing on scientific and climate-resilient farming practices.

The campaign promoted soil test-based nutrient management, balanced use of fertilisers, Natural Farming and improved Soil Health Management. Farmers were encouraged to reduce the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and adopt eco-friendly alternatives to improve long-term soil fertility.

Hands-on training covered the preparation and application of green manure, organic manure, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) techniques and the efficient use of fertilisers and other agricultural inputs.

Agriculture officials stressed that healthy soil is key to sustainable agriculture and higher farm productivity. They urged farmers to adopt soil testing before applying nutrients, saying the practice would help lower cultivation costs, improve crop yields and protect the environment.

Officials said the successful implementation of the campaign underscores the district’s commitment to promoting climate-resilient agriculture and equipping farmers with scientific knowledge for sustainable agricultural development.
