Shillong, Jul 27: Two teenagers died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle in Golflink late Sunday night, triggering a police manhunt for the driver.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said an 18-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were riding a scooty when they were struck.
“The victims were rushed to Civil Hospital but were declared brought dead. One is from Mawpun and the other from Pynthor,” Syiem told reporters on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Benjamin Shabong, 18, and Fabela Grace, 17.
Police said they responded within 5 minutes after being alerted.
“I got the information first and alerted Pasteur and Sardar Traffic. They reached the spot in under 5 minutes,” the SP said.
A case has been registered under UD and efforts are on to trace the vehicle.
“We are working to identify the vehicle that was involved. Once identified, we will arrest the driver,” Syiem said.
Investigators will also rely on the post-mortem report to check for factors like alcohol consumption and alertness at the time of the accident. Traffic police will conduct a parallel probe to fix responsibility.
“From the FIR, it is clear the driver should have stopped and surrendered. Since he fled, it shows fault on his part. We have registered cases against both the driver and the vehicle. We will track it down,” he added.
