Shillong, Jan 20: The District Magistrate East Khasi Hills on Monday has imposed a curfew in Mawkynrew Village under Madanrting Police Station in East Khasi Hills District following serious concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in the area.

District Magistrate Rosetta Mary Kurbah in an order, has mentioned that the decision was taken in response to incidents of vandalism and property destruction, including damage at the under-construction Ramakrishna Mission School in Mawkynrew.

“Whereas, information is received that there is a serious deterioration of law & order in areas under Mawkynrew Village under Madanting PS with reports of vandalism causing destruction to property and person at Ramakrishna Mission School, Mawkynrew. Whereas, these activities are likely to continue with every likelihood of causing serious breach of peace and tranquility and may lead to loss of life and property”, said the District Magistrate in the order.

The Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) will stand until further notice and the curfew applies specifically to Mawkynrew Village and was issued ex parte due to the urgent need to restore order. Residents have been urged to comply with the restrictions to aid in maintaining peace and security in the region, mentioned the order.

Worth mentioning, a violent clash broke out on Monday in Mawkynrew area between local residents and law enforcement authorities. The unrest led to police resorting to lathi charges and firing tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

It was informed that the incident was triggered by public outrage over the allocation of land by the village authorities of Mawkynrew Pyllun to the management of Ramakrishna Mission, which is constructing a school in the area. Residents from Mawleiñ and Mawkynrew villages, both men and women, gathered in large numbers to protest against the decision.

The protesters claimed that the disputed land had already been allocated to the Mawkynrew Sports Club for use as a playground and alleged that the decision to reallocate the land to the Ramakrishna Mission was made without their knowledge or consent.

Reports indicate that 5 to 6 people, including a woman, sustained injuries, along with some police personnel.
