Addressing the inaugural program of the Diamond Jubilee cum 8th Biennial Sports Meet of the All Maring Sports Association (AMSA) on January 20 at Laiching Kangshang Village in Tengnoupal District, Singh reflected on the shared history of the state’s communities. “We must remember how our ancestors stood united to safeguard our motherland from external threats,” he remarked.

Highlighting Manipur’s rich cultural diversity, the Chief Minister noted that the state is home to 34 to 35 indigenous communities who have coexisted and protected their land for generations. He cited the role of the Maring community during the Seven Years’ Devastation Period, recalling how they provided the poison for the Arambai weapon, which was instrumental in resisting the Burmese (Awa) invasion. “Such stories are embedded in our folktales,” Singh added, underscoring the deep-rooted ties among the communities.

Turning to the ongoing ethnic tensions, Singh assured that the state government harbours no animosity towards any community. He expressed concern, however, about illegal migration and the proliferation of unrecognized villages in border areas, which pose challenges to governance and harmony.

The Chief Minister also stressed the need for larger communities to support smaller groups, fostering unity and collective progress. “For the overall development of Manipur, it is essential for major communities to support the minorities in their aspirations and well-being,” he said.
