Shillong, Dec 17: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated a series of research projects undertaken by the Research and Development Committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). The initiative, funded through a grant of Rs. 50 lakh from the Chief Minister’s office, aims to preserve and promote Khasi traditions and culture through scholarly research and documentation.
The launch, held in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem, featured the release of several books authored by researchers. The publications cover a range of topics related to Khasi heritage, including governance in environment through traditional practices, traditional medicine and healing for health tourism, matrilineal culture, and marriage practices in Khasi society, among others.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sangma underscored the importance of preserving traditional knowledge and using it to address contemporary global challenges, particularly in the areas of environmental conservation and sustainable development.
“Our rich traditions and practices should be documented and promoted. The ancient wisdom embedded in our culture can offer solutions to emerging issues like climate change, health, and sustainability,” said Sangma.
He highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting similar research initiatives in the future, noting that the success of KHADC’s efforts could serve as a model for other autonomous councils like the Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills Autonomous District Councils.
Acknowledging the value of research-driven policy, the Chief Minister revealed that the government of Meghalaya has also introduced a research grant of Rs. 3 lakh for scholars working under the Art and Culture Department, with 40 to 50 researchers currently benefitting from the scheme.
Sangma further announced that the books released during the event would be made available in college and university libraries across the state. Additionally, he pledged to request Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to ensure that select books are included in the tribal studies sections of central universities across India.
“People need to read, understand, and know about the tribal societies of the Northeast. These books are a reflection of the extensive knowledge and heritage that can be shared with a larger audience,” he underscored.
