Must read

Shillong, June 6: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated the Nature Interpretation Centre at Ka Phan Nonglait Park which showcases and documents the rich flora and fauna of Meghalaya on Tuesday.

Conrad Sangma shares a series of pictures from the inauguration programme.

This is among the few remaining recreational centres in Shillong. Earlier, this park was known as Lady Hydari Park. The park was later renamed as – Ka Phan Nonglait Park in honour of the freedom fighter from Rymmai village. Rymmai fought against the British during the period of U Tirot Sing.

Recently, the decision to rename the park was by the cabinet following demands from social organisations like the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).

In Meghalaya’s matrilineal society, the Ka Phan Nonglait represents the grit and strength of women who put stiff resistance against the Britishers to defend the people of the state.

In 1987, the then Governor of Assam Sir Robert Neil Reid had developed it from a marshland and named the park as the Lady Reid Pleasure Park in memory of his wife.

Later, between 1947 to 1948, park was renamed as Lady Hydari Park when Sir Akbar Hydari took over as the Governor of Assam.

Earlier in the day, CM also took part in World Environment Day celebration and planted saplings.
