Imphal, Jan 5: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an apex body representing the Meitei community, has attributed the ongoing ethnic conflict in the state to a “lack of genuine political leadership.”
Speaking to media persons, COCOMI coordinator Thockhom Somorendro criticized both the BJP and Congress for prioritizing party interests over the well-being of the people.
Somorendro also lambasted the state’s security apparatus, accusing the Director General of Police and the Security Advisor of incompetence in managing the crisis. He highlighted the January 3 attack on the Superintendent of Police’s office in Kangpokpi district, where SP Manoj Prabhakar was injured, as an example of the authorities’ failure to act against perpetrators.
“The actions of the security forces appear partial and biased. They have completely failed to address the growing unrest,” the COCOMI leader asserted.
He also pointed to the blockade of National Highway (NH-2) by certain groups, criticizing the lack of action despite the presence of a substantial security force in the state. “A proxy war has been going on in Manipur,” Somorendro alleged, while lamenting the normalization of corruption, which he said was stalling progress in the state.
In contrast, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) announced a temporary suspension of its indefinite economic blockade on NH-2 and the 24-hour shutdown in Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi district.
